Day 2
First, the soap at hotel #2 was sufficiently cute for Daughter #1. Unfortunately, the hotel has an outdoor pool (didn't I mention that THAT was a problem?). I actually far prefer outdoor pools. Ours, unfortunately closes at 8pm (problem getting back from dinner at 8:05pm).
Our highlight today (remember, Rob's perspective) was the Gettysburg battlefield. I meticulously planned this part of the journey - much as I did our stop at Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Brief aside on Devil's Tower...
Looking back at my blog I never told that story... While travelling from Colorado to South Dakota, we stayed someplace in the middle of NOWHERE. Going to breakfast, I saw a brochure for Devil's Tower (the cool looking rock formation from Close Encounters). "Hey Tracey, this thing is only 200 miles out of our way - let's go see it." and we did - and it was cool. Tracey's reflection on our vacation was she spent 100 hours painstakingly researching where to go, where to stay and I threw that in at the last minute - and it worked out.
...end aside... So Dad called me yesterday Monday while I was on the Ohio Turnpike. His suggestion when I mentioned where I was that I should see Gettysburg - great stop on a trip through the Central Atlantic coast. So I looked - this time it only cost us an hour (practically on the way). It meant getting off of the Turnpike and getting rural. REALLY RURAL. I wouldn't think one could get this rural in Pennsylvania. Even better, it was a roller-coaster type ride 9% down slope. Big trucks can't go more than 20 miles an hour, hair-pin turns. Outstanding decision!
We had a great lunch at some brew pub right outside the park. We were a big tight on time and could only spend an hour and a half or so on the battle field. We spent most of that orienting ourselves on the battlefield. Perspective is a good thing. I was surprised to learn that as recently as 1938 (not that recent I know), there had been a gathering of ALL living participants of the battle and several thousand former soldiers (in their 90s and beyond) came.
Following Gettysburg, we bolted down to Alexandria (home base for the next couple days). More tomorrow.
