The Boston Marathon is typically run on the third Monday in April - Patriot's day.  Three doors down from our house in Wayland (10 Snakebrook to our 4) lived the Salazars (they were Boston Globe customers and it was difficult to understand their Cuban accents).  One of their kids was Alberto and he ran/won the Boston Marathon in 1982 (12 years older than me - much later banned from the sport for life).   In Massachusetts, the herring spawn in the ponds they were born in.  Those ponds connect to streams and rivers (e.g. the Charles River) that empty into the Atlantic also in the spring around the same time. Herring is a pretty generic term - in Massachusetts they're Alewives (we just called them herring).  When I lived in Boston in 1991, I took the T - Redline - into the city and caught the train at Alewife. Although there has been lots of damming of the rivers, society has built fish ladders so that they can jump up...

Welcome Elsa

Image
Elsa came from family in Indiana.  With as little judgment as I can manage, she seems to be a family dog Se knows how to walk and socialize with people.  She's has puppies (maybe recently).  One day one she was REALLY shy.  Retiring, cowering, disappear into the ground shy.  Her default move is to lay down low and show her stomach. She came in without meeting Gino - he was in the car.  She spent a couple hours in the kitchen by herself.   We have two dog gates and set them up in the short hallway to the kitchen 30 inches apart.  As I introduced the dogs I sat between and fed them both treats.  They seemed a little interested in each other.  We waited until Tracey came home and introduced them outside.  Gino is very "in your face" and I perceive that he can be a lot.  They seemed mostly fine. Back inside we separated them again for dinner.  Later I took down one of the gates so they could sniff each other directly....

Dad's recollection of reporting for Naval duty

In 1964, the Vietnam war was increasing and I was likely to be drafted following graduation so I opted to serve as an officer and signed up for Navy Officer candidate school with a 10/64 report date. I worked for the Associated Press in NYC as a reporter that summer, the year of New York World’s Fair where I covered numerous events and interviewed celebrities, politicians and state beauty queens. Carol's Christmas stories

1.  Christmas packages from Milwaukee included Usingers sausages and fruit cakes from aunt olive. 2.  German stollen made by Gertrude, mother loved this every year. 3.  “Mountains bars”, candy sent by uncle art.  Chocolate mountains with white centers. 4. Trip to see Macy’s thanksgiving parade.  Mary took Cathy and carol.  We went to the automat for hot chocolate.  Automats were NYC restaurants where food was in little glass compartments.  These were coin operated.  Really fun. 5. We girls would make snowmen when Long Island got some snow.  The boys, Tom and Mike would have to assemble them cause they were big. 6.  After playing in snow, mittens, gloves and socks were placed on base heaters to dry out. 7.  Percy faiths, “hallelujah chorus “, was the most played Christmas record for all of our Christmas’s. 8.  Every Christmas Eve, we went to midnight mass.  Mothers sang in the choir.  Always a latin high mass, ve...

Sean stories and more from Mary

My mother had bought a lovely new couch.  One day when we were all out Sean tore up one of the pillows on the side you sit on. When we got home from school we found the damage before my mother got home from work.  Luckily the pillows could be turned over.   When we were all sitting a round the table for dinner we were all very quiet  Then my mother said "alright whats going on". So we had to show her the pillow and she said that's it we are getting rid of that dog.   Mike had the honers of taking him to the dog pound.  All the girls cried to my father to plead to get the dog back and of course said he agreed. Mother was not very happy about that - but we we were delighted.  --- My father's birthday was in April.   One year he received a pair of white walking shorts. We had a wash line out in the back yard to dry the laundry.  My father's shorts were hanging on the line and Sean decided it would be fun to jump...
